Hey Jeff, thank you very much for this information. Just when I thought about why my ChildWindows did not style properly, a friend send me the link to this post. Now my windows look great!

I created a ChildWindow template and have exactly the same issue of drag and drop being "choppy". I suspect it's a bug in the ChildWindow control. I'm about to just disable dragging functionality altogether. That's fine for the Zune style which doesn't "look" draggable but mine looks like a Windows 7 aero window which implies it can be dragged so that's gonna bug me. :(

@Rangoric,
Now I see what I get for not implementing all the template parts! I didn't even know that it did that.

Actually the ChildWindow is draggable by default, via the Titlebar. I still prefer this over the default one though, even losing that :)

@Jim,
The opacity on the edges could be done in theory using an OpacityMask applied to whatever you put in the ItemTemplate for the ListBox. You would need to do some creative work to make it a very specific size, but I bet it wouldn't be too hard to do. Give Blend a try on that, I'll blog if I spend any time on it.

@Brad,
I'll look into it. The choppy behavior might be because of the way that I tried to restrict and control the window size using columns in a Grid.

It's not so much that it's a common case to drag it around, but I can see users wanting to see information in the background (in the case of context based popup) that is blocked by the window while entering information.

Even if you don't implement it, could you help me out?
I figured by just adding the "Chrome" template part, it would allow dragging, but I must be doing it wrong because the dragging is very choppy and screwy.

By the way, thanks for the style. :)

@Brad,
I'm not sure why - the ChildWindow isn't designed to be moved around as far as I know.

Jeff,

Nice article. Your child window has a lot more appeal than the default.

On a related topic, one of the cosmetic things I really like about the Zune software is the way it uses opacity at the edges of a scrollable listbox. If the name of a song or album is truncated, due to a smaller than necessary listbox, it fades out the text on the edges - very slick looking. I love it if you could offer up a SIlverlight solution.

Thanks,
Jim
